Derwenthorpe, York

Overview

Derwenthorpe is a partnership scheme with the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust on this multi award-winning development of contemporary homes.

Derwenthorpe is creating a landmark community of energy-efficient homes, designed to meet the needs of both current and future residents.

Following the huge success of the first phase of 64 homes, which we completed in 2013, we were appointed by the Trust to develop the remaining three phases which will deliver a further 425 homes. The scheme includes over 40% affordable homes and will be delivered in less than five years.

These unique David Wilson homes are being built to a high-quality design which reflects local architectural styles and draws on the legacy of Joseph Rowntree’s garden village built a century ago at nearby New Earswick.

All incorporate green features and materials to promote sustainable and affordable living. Innovative construction methods, including structurally insulated panels and thin-joint blockwork are delivering industry-leading air tightness and fabric energy efficiency. A biomass energy centre provides low carbon heat and hot water across the site – an unusual feature in a development of family homes.

The development layout puts people at the centre of the community and a third of the site area – up to 18 acres – will be public open space and park areas.

Derwenthorpe is an exemplary scheme which creates a real sense of place through quality design and has been recognised by numerous awards.
