Burnside Riverside Quarter, Aberdeen

Overview

Burnside is an-award winning development in Aberdeenshire, part of an urban quarter focused on the regeneration of Davidson’s Paper Mill.

The Riverside Quarter is a development of 720 new homes, located along the River Don in Bucksburn, just 4 miles from Aberdeen city centre. The design of the site celebrates its geographical, environmental and historical attributes, creating a neighbourhood which reflects its distinct industrial heritage.

The development forms part of an urban quarter focused on the regeneration of Davidson’s Paper Mill. The mill was in operation from 1811 until its closure in 1995 and, during the late 19th century, was the largest maker of paper bags in the world.

We have undertaken extensive restoration works to retain an existing 40m high chimney, which, in 1845, was predominant in the development of ‘Green’s Economiser’.  Across the development, brick is used to complement the chimney, whilst the use of granite reflects traditional Aberdeen architecture.

Working closely with local stakeholders has also enabled us to re-open the Bucks Bun watercourse, which had previously been culverted. The creation of a green corridor around the watercourse, with pedestrian footbridges across it and helps connect the community and provides a sense of arrival

Burnside has been awarded an NHBC quality award, as well as the RSPB Nature of Scotland ‘Business Award’ in 2018.
