PL2, Plymouth

Overview

PL2 is an award-winning partnership scheme, and is one of the most significant regeneration projects in the South West.

PL2 is transforming Plymouth’s old North Prospect estate, where properties had developed serious structural problems. The scheme will replace poor quality housing with 574 modern, energy-efficient homes, along with a community café, library, nursery and shops.

The project has received investment from the Homes and Communities Agency and backing from Plymouth City Council.

Barratt Homes was selected as development partner by Plymouth Community Homes (PCH) in autumn 2010. An incredibly tight timescale required a start on site by March 2011.

We worked closely with PCH and the local community to secure support for the scheme, which quickly won planning approval. Existing properties then had to be demolished and, in addition, there were ecological issues, not least the translocation of 1,500 slow worms!

Within the next 12 months, all 80 affordable homes were handed over to PCH and those for private sale were completed by June 2013.

The next phase comprised a community hub facility and 78 homes, which were handed over in early 2014. The current phase of 347 homes is due to be completed by March 2017.

The development is regularly visited by national housing associations and nominated for numerous awards.
